Vision Quest (6/9)

Tonight I'm writing from the central region of ghana. Matt is our host. Alex, another PC trainee has come with me and we're going to be here for the next 4-5 days. This is our "vision quest" where we spend a few days on site with a current volunteer and see what the job entails before we start training next week.

His house is very nice. It's several rooms, much bigger than I expected, and has electricity but no running water.

I've got to admit today was the first time I've felt hesitation or apprehension. Walking through the community today and stopping EVERY time a child yelled obruneee or a local person said hello is exhausting. Imagine walking through UF during summer term. Now imagine EVERY time you pass someone you're culturally expected to stop, greet, and chat. Wow. I'm gonna get grumpy fast I suspect. Today we also tried real ghanian food for the first time, took off the training wheels. IT was boiled yam and casava with a red sauce of spice, small pepper looking squash, onions, garlic etc. (Ampasi is the name). IT was spicy, messy and we ate with our hands. In ghana most food is eaten without silverware. Also, cultural tidbit, the left hand is considered dirty so you only eat, greet, or do anything else with your right hand. Trying to stick to it.

Class tomorrow with matt. God it's hot here. Oh and his fan is broken.
