Morning Assembly (6/25)

Every morning at our school we have assembly. It’s like the pledge of allegiance only every student at our small school stands in file, by class, and sings several songs in unison. The untrained natural beauty of their voices is amazing.

God bless our homeland ghaaaaanaaa

A young female voice sings, cuing the rest of the students to the next song. She stops after the first line to let the other children get ready. This is what always happens for every song every morning, but today something is different. As 6 boys walk to the front of the line and pick up 3 drums off of the ground it clicks in my head.

Pom-Pom-Pom

These drums have been on the ground all week that we have observed assembly

Pom-Pom-Pom
Pa-da-da-da………. Pom-Pom-Pom

They’re just now being lifted for the first time in 3 weeks, and the assembly takes on a whole new feel with the children and the drums singing together…

God bless our homeland ghaaaaanaaaa
POM-POM-POM
And make our nation great and strong
Pa-da-da-da, Pa-da-da-da!

This beautiful harmony gets inside me. So much history. So much culture.

I’m in Africa.
