My african shirts were a big hit. My first one had its grand appearance yesterday for an all group meeting we had. (soon you'll see why im so psyched bout this one). Anyways the session was basically a session where we got into our sector groups (Education/Small Enterprise Development/ Environment/ Health and Water Sanitation) and rotated to stations where we learned what the other groups do and how to do basic tasks of that division at our site.
I got a bunch of compliments and questions like
"Who's your tailor?"
"Loud colors. Only you would wear that combination of colors"
Yesterday was also a national holiday and so we got off early. I went to town, browsed a bit in the market and went online. Sonya one of hte trainees is staying with a family that owns a spot, so we all took the trip a few towns over to check it out. When we got there there was already like 20 PCTs dancing, drinking, and the msuic was so loud you had to yell to communicate. That's a characteristic of a spot by the way, unecessarily loud music.
So remember how I told you about the night-life schedule in these small towns? Well we decided to call it a night at 8:30 and guess what; there are no more cabs leaving town. Any drivers you can find were drinking, celebrating, and simply saying "No, I'm done tonight.". I finally got a cab, yes mom he was sober, chartered a drop taxi to our town like 30 minutes away and the rate worked out well, only like 1.3 Ghc (Ghana Cedis) when the normal rate would have been about 1.35. (The conversion rate is about 1.4 ghc to $1). Anways it was a good deal, even though we had to pack 7 people into that taxi.
So I get dropped off near my house, I am about to walk inside and I get a phone call... "who could it be?"
Alaska? My tailor?
"Hello?...Alaska?"
(Loud music is playing in the background and he's clearly drunk)
"Yoo, man , how are you"
"I'm fine, whats up?
"Oh good man..........*pause*... How's the shirt?"
"It's great bro. Thanks..."
"Cool man cool... so you'll come back?"
"Yah, man of course."
"Cool. Ok. I'll keep your measurements then."
"lol, ok sounds good buddy, I'll talk to you later"
"Cool."
And I hung up. I was exhausted when I got home, but I didnt want to forget this experience in foggy drinking memory, so my entry for yesterday (7/1) simply read
"Don't forget this. You just got a drunk dial from your tailor..."
