Chillin with the fam (6/26-6/28)

(Written Sat 6/28)
Another saturday gone, another group trip to the "For You" spot, and some good games of beer pong. I think I'm starting to get a cold and drinking last night wasnt the greatest idea.

Since theyre unrelenting I have decided to stop trying to beat them, and join them. I'm sitting in my back yard hangin out with the goats.

This morning my homestay mom asked if I would join her for church. I dodged that bullet again but I think next week I'm gonna have to join her.

It's been a few days, what did I miss...

Friday was wholly uneventful. I taught my third class and went to the larger local town to use the internet. Thats when I dropped the last set of posts on. That night was the culmination of the festival but since it rained, everyone scattered and took refuge in nearby spots.

(God these goats never shut up...)

So yesterday I came home for lunch and sat in the back yard with my family for a bit after. Ama, the eldest daughter was there as well. I have her in one of my math classes and I'm guessing she's probably about 16. Although she could be 20, my age predictions are totally off here. And since Junior High (JHS) students range from 12-23 years old, it's even harder to gauge.

(I'm now going to take a tangent and explain my family structure before we return to your usually scheduled program..)

So my host "mom" is actually a grandmother. Her name is Gladys, and she has had several children during her life. Those children have also had children, and the grandkids are living with us. Kofi (KOE-fee) and his brother Kwesi(KWEH-see) (from the pictures I posted before) are from one of her children, and Ama(AH-mah) and Sika(SEE-kah) are from another one of Glady's children. Still with me? She's a grandma, 4 grand kids, from 2 diff sets of parents... anyways... so Gladys' husband has passed away and she raises the grandchildren. Kofi and Kwesi's parents are overseas, I think trying to get them naturalized in another country. Ama and Sika's parents live in our local town, and the mom stops by quite often. However aparantly if it's financially and spatially possible, its preferred for grandparents to raise children here. Sika and Ama also have a baby brother, who I affectionatley refer to as "mini-man" cuz I have no idea what his name is.

OK we're back.
Previously on guillermoinghana:
Guillermo was sitting outside after having lunch...

So we're outside, me, my homestay Mom, Ama, Sika, and an older woman, a friend of the family. Theyre all eating and speaking in Twi, so I kind of zone out. The talking gets louder and I hear the lady say Ama's name. When I looked up, Ama looked at me, giggled and turned away. My homestay mom then said something, and the lady got up. She started singing and dancing, and left the house.

When the yelling and laughs finally ended my HS mom turns to me and says
"Do you understand what this woman was saying? She said you will marry Ama. And I said, no! He cannot! Because I will marry him first!"

I started laughing and said
"I mean, if you'd have me, I'd be honored."
I got down on one knee and kissed her hand.

She yelled a cheer, gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"Yaaah! I will marry my own son!.... this is good.. (laughing) .... yes this is good... I will marry my son".

So sorry ladies. Seat's taken. She heats my bucket water in the morning, she's always smiling, and maaan can she cook..

  2. Just know that if you go to church come with offering and let them know you are a "volunteer" no job--no money.
