Yesterday was my first real teaching day. I taught the form 2 and then form 3 science classes. The first thing I did with all of them was class rules (remember I did this with the Form 1's last week). Overall it went very well. I joked with them some but mostly used my first day to be strict and setup the standards for my class. I covered Elements and Compounds with Form 2 and did a review of balancing chemical equations with the Form 3 kids.
It was a solid lesson both times, the class was engaged and the top performers were clearly into it and catching on. Near the end of the day, outside the Form 3 room just after my lesson, I'm pretty sure I heard a student mocking the way I talked. Funny thing is it didn't bother me at all. I was confident in my performance and knew the way I started the year was what we'd need to be able to handle more fun unruly exercises later.
Haha it's funny how well running a fraternity filled with college "men" prepared me to deal with a class full of middle school children...
